The Principles of Reiki

Reiki In Galway with Matthew ConnollyThere are many different variations on the Principles of Reiki. The core message and desired results however nearly always remain the same. One of my favourite variations to date is as follows.

Just for today

I will not rise to anger

I will not succumb to worry

I will apply myself diligently

I will manifest compassion to all beings

I will express gratitude for all of my blessings

The principles lean heavily towards developing a personal awareness of our own mind body connection, and also towards the Law of Attraction or Karma - that which we give to the world we also receive.

Just for today – brings the attention into the present moment, where our power for action always resides.

"The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, worry about the future nor anticipate troubles, but to live in the present moment wisely and earnestly." The Buddha

I will not rise to anger – recognises that that which we offer to the world, we offer through ourselves. When we become unnecessarily angry, we only hurt ourselves needlessly by exciting the mind and producing stress in the body.

"Holding onto anger is like holding onto a hot coal with the intention of throwing it at someone; we are the ones who get burned." – The Dalai Lama

I will not succumb to worry – recognises the power of our thoughts to create our reality. Every thought we entertain in worry keeps us in a state of stress that prevents us from functioning at our full potential, thus producing more worrying results in the future through of our lack of concentration.

I will apply myself diligently – is the antidote to worry. By concentrating on what can be done in the present moment and acting with faith in ourselves and our abilities we engage our full creative faculties.

I will manifest compassion to all beings – recognises our connection with (our) life all around us. We are dependent, interdependent and independent all at once. Each action we take in any given moment may have consequences in the future. It is important to act with compassion in order to nurture our connection with life and walk a path that nurtures and supports us.

I will express gratitude for all of my blessings – recognises the kindness and generosity that exists all around us. By focusing on this kindness, and expressing our gratitude sincerely whenever we can, we attract more generosity to ourselves.

Practice of these principles is just the beginning of a process which invites much more sensitivity and balance into our lives. On-going studies of the effects of stress show that cultivating a peaceful state of mind is infinitely beneficial of our physical and emotional health.

The principles suggest that our personal levels of peace of mind and many aspects of our physical health are directly related to our perceptions, thoughts and beliefs about life. Our beliefs and perceptions, in the form of our thoughts, are sending signals (or vibrations) of either harmony or disharmony to our bodies, causing either feelings of peace and relaxation or feelings of fear and stress which cause many diseases.

Choosing to be treated with, or to learn Reiki, is to accept a very harmonious and natural signal or vibration in place of signals of fear, disharmony and dis-ease. In order to gain a more in depth experience of how it works, it is advisable to receive a treatment for oneself, however we will explore in more detail the specifics of a treatment in upcoming articles.
