Galway Fertility: Endometriosis Diet The foods to avoid!
Written by Blueheronclinic.com
As endometriosis is one of the leading causes of infertilitythere are specific foods to avoid when following the diet and many women who suffer from endometriosis can improve their condition and their fertility naturally by simply watching what they eat. Knowing which foods to avoid can make a huge to your quality of life.Below, we will focus on eliminating foods that increase prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are a stimulator of estrogen, which is the hormone responsible for causing havoc s havoc in endometriosis sufferers. Excess estrogen is responsible for many symptoms including painful period cramps, as well as Menorrhagia (heavy periods), diarrhea and nausea.
However, not all prostaglandin are bad. For instance, prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) actually helps to relieve symptoms, while prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and prostaglandin F2a (PGF2a) contribute to the symptoms of endometriosis mentioned above.
See below for foods to avoid when following an endometriosis diet:
- Refined Sugar – Sugar tends to create a more acidic environment within the body which can increase the inflammatory pain of endometriosis. Therefore, it's a good idea to limit the consumption of sweets!
- Wheat – Wheat contains phytic acid which can aggravate your endometriosis symptoms. Wheat also contains gluten which has been shown to increase in painful symptoms of endometriosis. Products containing wheat and gluten should be avoided or limited at all costs.
- Caffeine – Frequent consumption of Caffeine, has been found to increase estrogen levels, this can trigger endometriosis flare ups. Drinking more than two cups of coffee a day may cause estrogen levels to rise as well as having a negative impact on fertility - this goes for men too!
- Alcohol – One of the worst offenders, alcohol has a negative effect on the liver which plays an essential role in clearing out excess estrogen. You should reduce your alcohol intake while trying to get pregnant or suffering from endometriosos.
- Dairy products – These stimulate the production of PGE2 and PGF2a, which can definitely worsen your symptoms. The worst offenders include milk and cheeses. Substitute your calcium needs with sesame seeds, almonds, salmon, sardines, seaweed, figs, and calcium supplements if needed.
- Red Meat – Meat promotes PGF2a production. Furthermore, non organic red meat may contain growth hormones that include estrogen. If buying organic is proving difficult try substituting with other forms of protein such as wild fish, nuts and seeds.
- Refined carbohydrates – Refined carbohydrates (I.E. white bread, pasta, flour, pastries etc.) have had most of their natural nutrients removed and are difficult to digest. These will deplete the body's nutritional stores as your digestive system needs to work harder to absorm the few nutrients found in refined carbs. This can lead to increased endometriosis symptoms so stay with complex carbohydrates such as wholegrain breads, pasta, brown rice, etc.
- Additives and preservatives –processed or pre-packaged foods contain chemicals which may aggrivate your problem. Stick with fresh vegtables, fish, nuts, seeds and fruit (all organic if possible!).
Endometriosis Treatment
For women suffering from debilitating endometriosis symptoms, the recommended course of action by doctors is to start hormone treatment or undergo surgery. The issue with this approach is apart from being very expensive, most medications prescribed for endometriosis come hand in hand with unwanted side effects, and there are no guarantees that surgery will be a permanent solution.
By focusing on a healthy diet, stress reduction and moderate daily excercise you can take positive steps toward improving your situation.
