Acupuncture 101
Written by The Blue Heron Clinic
Most people find Acupuncture to be incredibly relaxing and while there may be some momentary tingling or numbness on needle insertion this is offset by the therapeutic value of the treatment. My usual response to this question is "It's not nearly as bad as visiting the Dentist!"
Your local Acupuncturist
What should you look for from a professional Clinic?
- Full Professional Qualifications
- Registered with Irish Health Insurers
- Full Professional Indemnity Insurance
- Registered Member of a professional body
- Use of EU and FDA quality standards approved Acupuncture Needles
Time Spent in Clinic
Frequency of Acupuncture treatment is based on the following:
- Your general health and constitution
- History and duration of the presenting complaint
- Frequency and regularity of Acupuncture treatment
- Patient should be comfortable and stationary for the duration of each acupuncture treatment
Acupuncture Treatment DurationAs your Acupuncture treatments may last for several weeks or months depending on your health requirements, choosing the right acupuncturist for you is an important first step on your road back to health and wellness. The Blue Heron Clinic recommends weekly Acupuncture treatment of between 3 weeks and six months depending on your health requirements.
Is Acupuncture Safe?
Qualified Acupuncturists should use safe and effective techniques
- Single use, sterile, nontoxic needles be used in all treatments
- Proper hygiene and sanitation standards should be used at all times
- Acupuncture point areas on skin should be fully sterile before needle insertion
- Patient should be comfortable and stationary for the duration of each acupuncture treatment
EXPERIENCE COUNTS! When practiced by an experienced, qualified Acupuncturist, acupuncture is a safe and highly effective therapy. However, not all acupuncture clinics follow the same procedures and as a minimum I would recommend that prospective patients follow the points listed above as enquiring on the cost and style of acupuncture being practiced.
